Have you ever received a piece of advice from a mentor that was so profound that it stuck with you for years? It may have influenced your behavior or decisions, and over time, you may have internalized it and started to live it to the point where you’d forgotten it came from someone else. In my career, I’ve come across three of those pieces of advice that have really changed my perspective and way of thinking and stuck with me for years, and I’d like to share them with you.

  1. The decisions about you and your career are happening when you aren’t in the room, so you better speak up when you are.

  2. Too many people waste their energy trying to outsmart the competition before they even get to the arena. You can’t win if you aren’t on the playing field.

  3. There is more confidence in not knowing than being all-knowing.

I share the stories behind these three powerful pieces of advice that I have taken to heart and used to take my career to the next level, as well as a bonus lesson that I learned during my years of amateur boxing. Trust me, they will change your outlook!

If you type in “decision maker” into google the first 4 results that come up are random decision generators. You put in the question or your options and the decision makers decide for you. It’s on the top of the page because people are searching for it. Why? Because many people are dealing with massive decision fatigue. Rapid changes produces decision fatigue. In this episode I'm going to dive into how decision fatigue shows up (paralysis, stagnation, aimlessness)and 3 keys for flipping it into strong decision making, more innovation and progress.

Whether you are operating in a startup space or a part of a huge company, something that has a huge impact on innovation is the culture of experimentation. Yet, this is not easy to cultivate in a company and requires careful and thoughtful actions from everyone. Brian Ardinger has some insights about how best to build cultures of experimentation, and the methods to do it.

Brian Ardinger is the Director of Innovation at Nelnet, most commonly known for being a student loan service, but which also operates in other financial services. At Nelnet, Brian is involved in innovation externally, in startup investing, and internally, in helping build a culture of innovation across the different business units. Brian is also the founder of InsideOut.IO, a podcast, newsletter, and event series that brings together innovators, entrepreneurs, people who are interested in innovation, the new world of work, and the new world we are living in.

What’s the difference between innovation inside the company and outside of the company? Brian shares his thoughts on how these types of innovation complement each other and integrate with each other. We also dig into why ideas often go nowhere and innovation gets stuck, as well as the appropriate metrics to be using in the early stages of innovation. Brian also talks us through how he thinks of building a culture of experimentation with a unique methodology and why everyone needs to equip themselves with skills of innovation and entrepreneurship.

One question I keep getting from a lot of people is, How do I get people to listen to my ideas? And the interesting thing is that these people are coming from two very different ends of the spectrum. On the one hand, I have people who are struggling with being seen as too young or inexperienced, and so their ideas aren’t being taken seriously. On the other hand, I have people who are “overly experienced” and who have been on the job for a long time and are perceived as being stuck in their ways and resistant to innovation.

I have five great tips for you, regardless of whether you’re on one side of the spectrum or the other about how to get buy-in for your ideas and influence others. It all starts with how we think about convincing others.

Tip #1: When thinking about getting buy-in and influencing others, we often think about how to convince people. However, what I’ve discovered is that it’s not about convincing others — it's about convincing yourself and showing that confidence and belief in your own ideas!

Think about how you’re presenting yourself — do you have the confidence and conviction in your own ideas before you put them forward?

We’ve all been there. We get started on a new project and we’re all excited and brimming with new ideas, but over time, we tend to fall back on old tricks and habits. It feels like the magic fades and it becomes so hard to keep it going, especially when the doubting and naysaying comes in. So, how can we keep our magic from getting stale as time passes?

It comes down to Kelley and Conner’s Emotional Cycle of Change — that’s why we start off with magic and excitement but then it dips down, and this applies to any change cycle, whether it's changing our habits, behaviors, mindsets, or driving a new idea or innovation. I share more about the five stages in this cycle — uninformed optimism, Informed pessimism, hopeful realism, informed optimism, and completion — and where we often get stuck or start to feel unmotivated.

I also have some strategies that you can put into action right away that can help you push through and keep the magic going in a realistic way, just by moving into the mindset of hopeful realism and informed optimism. By allowing us to keep the magic going but have a relationship with reality, we can keep changing and keep innovating. Find out five ways of how you can keep the magic alive too.

Most of us start off the new year with some ideas or resolutions of things we want to achieve, improve, or change from the previous year. However, not a lot of us make it to the end of seeing our resolutions through an entire year. What’s stopping us?

The reason for this — and the reason why most innovation efforts and behavior change efforts fail is that we reach the bottom of the J-curve and give up when faced with negativity, doubt, and frustration. We often think that change and innovation is a straight line accelerating upwards. Unfortunately, that's not how it works. It’s actually a J-curve where it starts off well, then it dips for a while before picking up again. And we often give up at the bottom of the J-curve, but that's exactly where we need to persevere and push through to reap the benefits of our hard work.

I share some of my own stories both in business and in my personal life about what it was like to hit the bottom of the J-curve, and what you can do when you're exhausted and frustrated at the bottom of the J curve, and feel like giving up. Hint: Use the things that weren't working as fuel to improve your idea.

  1. Find a story that works for you and stick to it: What’s the story you tell yourself to keep you hungry and fighting to reach a higher level? Find it, and stick to it!

  2. Turn wants into needs: Do you fight harder for things you need or things you want? Reframe your goals from wants to needs.

  3. Understand and align with your strengths: You can avoid your weaknesses, but you can’t really win without leveraging your strengths, but that starts with really uncovering your strengths.

Here’s the thing. Being innovative is universal, but how we innovate is different. By using these three keys to unlock your human performance, you tap into your unique innovation abilities, reach new heights, and get to the next level.

Are you playing to your highest potential or are you just playing to the level of those around you?

I was watching my football team the other day and had this startling realization: When my team plays a good team, they're on fire. But when they play a weaker team, they make mistakes and mess up. What was happening? I realized they were playing to the level of the ability of their opponent, not their own. And what’s more - I realized that this is something we all do.

We have all enormous potential and ability, but too often, we let the playing field and our opponents dictate our own level of play. We fall into cycles of mediocrity because that’s what we’re used to seeing around us. But when we shift our mindset and decide to play at our highest ability instead of letting circumstances dictate what should happen, we will start seeing the rewards, despite the challenges.
